[ARTIST STAEMENT]  It is rare enough to get snow in the Pacific Northwest.  Rarer still to get more than a foot (30cm) overnight.  But that is what happened the night before I took this shot of a picnic table in Wright Park in downtown Tacoma WA, USA.

Tacoma has always been "the poor cousin" to Seattle.  30 miles (~60K) South of The Emerald City.  It traditionally suffered from having a paper mill located upwind of the major population center.  So it always had a slight smell of sulfur in the air.  The "Tacoma Aroma" as it is known locally.  However, starting in the late 1990s and into the 2000s the city has gradually changed.  Not the least of which is the abatement of the aroma (mostly).

Since the pandemic and the Great Migration, many of Seattle's millennial tech workers have discovered Tacoma for its (then) cheaper housing prices as well as access to the west side of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.  So Tacoma is changing.

Wright Park sits very close to downtown and historically was not considered a safe place for families, but in recent years the changes in the city have also helped it become a popular daytime walk.  Especially when it snows.  It is about the only place near downtown where one can enjoy both the 6 am solitude that comes with a snow day, as well as the fun of a snowball fight as it gets later in the day!
